first_img“It has always been a dream of mine to play in the Premier League and I have done.” Jamaican international Wes Morgan has not only realised his dream, he is also flourishing, making up for lost time even, as he leads unlikely title contenders Leicester City on a dream campaign. In many ways, Morgan’s rise has mirrored that of his club. It would fit perfectly well in a fairy tale book – Leicester battling with the big boys this season after last year’s near relegation and Morgan struggling in the lower leagues before making his top-flight debut at 30.”I thought the opportunity to play in the Premier League had passed me by. Everyone wants to play at the highest level, and it took a lot longer than I anticipated and wanted, but I got there eventually. I am enjoying it a lot!” Morgan said.He is today considered one of the most reliable defenders in the English Premier League, but it didn’t always look to be heading in that direction for the towering defender.Morgan was an awkward teenager, overweight with knees that rubbed together – hardly the model look for a footballer. He arrived at Nottingham Forest in 2002 after being cut from Notts County and spending a couple years at Dunkirk in the lower leagues. His arrival at Forest on trial was hardly an ‘arrival’ in truth, with then academy director John Pemberton admitting to hiding the out-of-shape-looking Morgan from the head coach for several months. The defender would eventually whip himself into shape and worked his way into a first team position at the club.”Getting released wasn’t nice. It was hard to take, but I remained positive and I got a trial at Forest, and that was an opportunity to get back into it, and that’s where it all started,” Morgan reminisced to bbc.com.He would end up moving to Leicester after a decade at Forest, where he had developed a reputation has a hard-nosed, studs-to-ankle type of defender. Exactly what the Foxes’ coaching staff was looking for.KEY FACTOREighteen months after making his Premier League debut, Morgan’s strength at the back has been a key factor in Leicester’s table-topping season. The defender is averaging 2.7 interceptions; 1.1 tackles; 5.3 clearances and 1.1 blocks per game to rank among the best in the league. But his focus is on the team and what they can achieve this season.”To be in the position we are in is an achievement in itself. Anything that happens now is definitely a bonus. People tipped us to be relegated at the start of the season, and we are competing at the top of the league,” said Morgan.”We are just delighted with how things have gone so far.”We have a real confidence and belief and know that on our day we can be as good, if not better, than anyone out there in this league,” he added. The Jamaican international has not forgotten his roots either and spends his weekdays coaching youngsters, perhaps with his mind on his own struggles at that stage.last_img read more

first_img8 April 2010 A new phrasebook containing hundreds of useful translations, along with pronunciation tips, promises both to enrich visitors’ experiences of South Africa and to help South Africans themselves to communicate more effectively. Hello South Africa, the phrasebook, contains translations of more than 600 phrases in 30 topics in each of the country’s official languages, making it a useful tool to help people converse on a basic level. The phrasebook concisely sums up South Africa’s diversity, while making communication in its 11 official languages easier. It was developed over 18 months by graphic designer Mark Macdonald and his wife Michelle, a voice and English pronunciation coach, with contributions from leaders in the fields of linguistics and social anthropology in South Africa. “While the product was originally developed to help people communicate with each other during the World Cup, it has since evolved into something which we believe could have far greater nation-building implications,” says Jenny Gautschi, who was involved with the development and marketing of the phrasebook. “Without a doubt, speaking to someone in his or her mother tongue and understanding something about that culture and its traditions, fosters a mutual respect,” says Gautschi. “This phrasebook offers a simple and effective way for people to achieve this.” The translations have been done by top academics from the African languages departments of a number of South African universities. “The introduction on the history of language in South Africa [was] written by Professor Rajend Mesthrie, a leader in the field of linguistics; and cultural introductions [were] written by Professor David Coplan, the chair of social anthropology at the University of the Witwatersrand.” For example, in Zulu one can confidently ask anything from “What is your name?” – “Ngubani igama lakho, pronounced ngoo-bah-nee ee-gah-mah lah-kaw?”, to telling somebody you have been bitten by a snake or letting a waiter know the service was excellent. Languages and topics are also colour-coded to ensure that any phrase is readily available. The phrasebook contains photographs, quick-reference language distribution maps which show where a specific language is spoken, and practical travel tips to help visitors have a better experience of the country. The tips section includes information on: banking; transport – taxis, buses and trains; internet cafes; and shops and markets. “It also serves as a souvenir of South Africa’s rich diversity of languages, cultures and magnificent natural beauty.” Hello South Africa is available at Exclusive Books outlets nationwide and selected Van Schaik stores. first_imgAll too often directors, producers and even lowly editors get too attached to their temp music. Here are a few thoughts on how to avoid that trap.Photo from FlickrTemp music, or temporary music, is the score you’re editing with until the final or ‘real’ music replaces it. Many editors get into the trap of using copyrighted temp music in their project and falling in love with this score. This inevitably leads to problems…One of the main problems with being attached to your temp music is that it is the first time you see the scene really working…all of the cuts and beats work perfectly, the emotions and drama are accented perfectly and more often than not you’ve slotted in a Hollywood score so it feels like ‘high production value‘!All your hard work has paid off and it just sounds epic! Everything is golden, right?  Well, except for the crucial fact that you can’t use the music. Not in a million years will you get the rights, nor are you likely to be able to afford them. So what can you do?5 Ways To Avoid The Temp Music TrapFirst of all, as a good composer friend said recently, temp music is called temporary for a reason and it should stay that way. If you’re going to use temp music you should do so as little time as possible, otherwise all the people who are hearing it time and time again are prone to be wedded to it. So don’t leave it in too long or it will burn you in the end.Secondly, and editors are pretty much divided on this axiom, try to edit your project for as long as possible without music in it at all. So, if it’s a drama the scene holds itself up, rather than being propped up by the score. Or if it’s corporate, the clients are focused primarily on getting the content right….the focus isn’t blurred by the presence of the music. Then, when you add it into your project it will make it THAT much better.photo by Brandon Giesbrecht on FlickrThird, use music you can afford. If you can afford the temp music that you’ve chosen then you’re onto a winner right out of the gate and have avoided the temp music trap all together. Stock libraries like PremiumBeat offer a wealth of musical possibilities that you can reasonably afford to keep in your project. When the producer says ”I love the music! What is it?” You don’t have to reply ”Oh we can’t use it, it’s from [insert latest and greatest film score here]”.If you composers that you like to work with (and your clients can afford their rates), use some ‘sketch tracks’ from them. Then just pay them a bit to polish it up a touch and give it a bespoke fit.The fourth way to avoid the temp music trap is for composers to recognise that the temp music has been chosen for many good reasons. One of the main problems that often occurs with the introduction of ‘the real music’ is that people don’t like it. You’ve lived with the old music for so long and suddenly its gone.Maybe the composer has come at it from a totally different direction. Sometimes that can be surprisingly good, but more often than not the comments come back to the effect of ”can’t you make it more like what we had before.”Hopefully your composer will recognize that choices have been made in the selection of the temp track that should be heeded in regards to it’s style, pace, rhythm, feel, progression and instrumentation etc. That way the new music will feel like it belongs, just like the temp music did.Photo by Health Service Glasses on FlickrFinally, if you’re going to use a composer over using royalty free music, make sure you get the composer in as early as possible.  If they can provide you with some rough ideas, sketch tracks, or references to use in your initial edit then that will save you a lot of pain in the long run.The temp music will sound and feel a lot like the final music because it will be coming from the very same artist with all their ideas and sensibilities mixed in. The composer’s ideas of what this project needs will be injected in early on, and will be mixing in with all the other editorial choices that will inevitably be made. This just helps to make the whole process a whole lot smoother.last_img read more

That’s a pretty cool combination: represent your country, grow as a coach, and grow the game. That’s a trifecta of winning. I’m just really thrilled to have the opportunity to represent my country and to have a whole lot of fun in the process.”In 2018-19, the Bruins finished 22-13 overall and 12-6 in the Pacific-12 Conference and advanced to their fourth straight NCAA Tournament Sweet 16.
