first_img Spurs have resumed pre-season training with their Wales international still very much part of the squad, despite continued rumours of a £30million move to Real Madrid. The north London club are reportedly set to offer Bale – who won last season’s PFA Player of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year accolades – a new, lucrative £130,000 week contract. Andre Villas-Boas signed Paulinho and Dawson feels more improvements can show Bale that Spurs can deliver his ambitions. “We all know how good Gaz was last year, he was world class and of course we have got plenty of other world-class players, so we have to make sure we keep hold of them all,” Dawson said at the launch of Spurs’ new Under Armour kit. Press Association “Gaz will be the first to admit he cannot do it without the rest of the team. He thoroughly deserved winning both awards last season, it was a great honour for him, he was amazing. But if we keep bringing players in, it is only going to make us better as a squad, that is what we want to do. “We have a fantastic squad with a great manager and good staff – everyone at the whole club is hungry to do well. Every player wants to be in the Champions League, we have just made a great signing and improvement is the key, bringing in players like Paulinho is only going to make the club better. “With the squad we have, if we keep improving that, it is going to take us to the next level.” Dawson added: “You want to keep your best players and also keep improving. We have already improved (the squad), I am sure we will continue to look to do that over the summer. As players, we will take that onto the pitch and then hopefully this time next year we can start talking about being in the Champions League again. “We have to go out there and perform to make sure we are in there again, because it is only ourselves to blame if we are not.” For much of last season, Spurs looked well set to qualify for the Champions League again, only to falter over the final few weeks as rivals Arsenal rallied to snatch fourth and with it secure a two-legged play-off berth in August for another crack at elite level European football. Dawson, though, sees no reason why Spurs should not feel confident for 2013-14. “The new season will start with a fresh campaign, and it is one we are looking forward to, when hopefully we will be able to achieve being back in the Champions League again,” he said. “We will keep fighting and have made some new signings, we all want to achieve things, so we are going in the right direction.” center_img Captain Michael Dawson maintains Gareth Bale would be the first to admit he could not have achieved anything without the support of his Tottenham team-mates, as the club look to take it to “the next level” in the 2013-14 season.last_img read more

first_imgA Donegal takeaway was ordered to close after dangerous food safety practices were discovered during an inspection. The Spicy Hut in Carrigart was served with a closure order from the Food Safety Authority in April after the discovery of hygiene issues that presented a ‘grave and immediate danger’.Sewage and waste was observed overflowing from an open drain in the rear yard of the Main Street takeaway, risking a transfer of faecal matter to the kitchen and the risk of contamination of food. A lack of pest control and a lack of effective cleaning and disinfection practices were also discovered in Spicy Hut. The inspector’s report said this failure to ensure food was protected from contamination was “likely to render the food unfit for human consumption or injurious to health”.The report also stated that there was a failure to ensure adequate provision for storage of food waste at the restaurant.“Bins were overflowing, food waste was stored in open containers and items of food were discarded throughout the rear yard of the premises,” the inspector wrote. The closure order was served under the FSAI Act 1998 on 11th April 2019 and lifted five days later. Speaking on the announcement of the latest FSAI enforcement orders nationwide, Dr Pamela Byrne, Chief Executive, emphasised that some food businesses are not providing adequate regard for their customers if they are not maintaining a clean and hygienic premises.Dr Byrne said: “The Enforcement Orders served in April were mainly due to premises being found to have poor and, in some cases, very low hygiene standards in place. Some of these premises have demonstrated a complete lack of concern for the health of both their customers and their staff who eat at or work in their establishments. These inadequate food safety practices are completely unacceptable in any food business.“I would remind food businesses that the legal responsibility for producing safe food lies firmly with them. It is disappointing to see that some food businesses are failing to operate stringent food safety practices to ensure that the food they are producing and selling to their customers is safe to eat,” Dr Byrne concluded.‘Overflowing sewage and waste’ led to Donegal takeaway closure was last modified: May 9th, 2019 by Staff WriterShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:Carrigartfood safetylast_img read more

first_imgIII. Budget Size Does Not Determine SuccessImage via United ArtistsThe production of Rocky is as much of an underdog story as the film itself. Sylvester Stallone was a struggling actor with a few background character roles under his belt. While broke and unable to find work, Stallone started writing a script in a spiral notebook. He had the first draft of Rocky completed in only three days. The script did find plenty of interested buyers, but no studio was willing to let Stallone star in the film as well. Eventually, Stallone would strike a deal with United Artists. The deal let him star in the film, but the films production budget was cut dramatically. The entire budget was just under $1,000,000.Stallone took the deal, and the movie was shot in 28 days. After its release, Rocky went on to be the highest grossing film of the year — pulling in $225 Million worldwide.IV. Think on Your Toes – Don’t Be Afraid to Make ChangesImage via MGMRocky’s limited budget required the crew and Stallone to work as quickly as possible, which would eventually lead to some minor production issues. For example, the team making the banners for the arena reversed the color of Rocky’s shorts. With the budget they had, there was no way to either fix the banner or even change the fighter’s actual shorts. In a quick moment, Stallone simply added a line to the script making fun of the situation. He did the same when Rocky’s robe was delivered oversized. The film also called for a date scene between Rocky and Adrian. Originally they would go to a popular rink and ice skate. The sequence called for hundreds of extras — which the production couldn’t afford. Instead, the crew filmed an empty rink and added a scene where Rocky bribes a janitor to let them skate after hours. The point is, something unexpected will happen. Don’t try to fix everything, not every problem needs to be solved. A quick fix is often better than losing days or weeks trying to fix a minor issue.V. You Will Make a Bad Film – Go Down, But Not OutImage via United ArtistsRocky V — Enough said.Honestly though, it’s bound to happen. There may be a film you are completely satisfied with, but the audiences don’t like. There are also plenty of times the whole film will be a disaster, and you’ll have to salvage whatever possible. Either way, just finish a project and move on. Every film offers something to learn from. Once this happens, you will then know how not to make a film. VI. Music Sets the ToneImage via United ArtistsAdmit it. You saw this picture and the song already started playing in the back of your head. Bum-Bum-Buuuuum Bum-Bum-Buuuum.Music is a huge part of storytelling, and that should be obvious with this whole franchise. From the original compositions of Bill Conti to the popular radio hits, the Rocky films have always embraced music for montage.Bill Conti’s Gonna Fly Now is an iconic song in its own right. It has not only become synonymous with Rocky, but with the story of every underdog. The film’s score was a massive hit, and Gonna Fly Now charted on the Billboard 200 for five weeks. Gonna Fly Now earned an Oscar Nomination for Best Original Song. This wasn’t even the only time a song from a Rocky film was nominated. Eye of the Tiger by Survivor also an Oscar Nomination for Best Original Song for Rocky III.Shameless Plug: Did you know this is also a production music site? Just sayin’…VII. Your Work Will Leave a Lasting Impact on SomeoneImage via MGMIt’s been 39 years since the first Rocky hit theaters. Sylvester Stallone had imagined that Rocky Balboa would be the final chapter in the Rocky saga. Then he was approached by up-and-coming director Ryan Coogler.Coogler had grown up on the Rocky franchise, his father watched the films repeatedly. His father would even play scenes from the movies,The scene he would always show was where Rocky is in the chapel of the hospital and Burgess Meredith, in the character of Mickey, comes in and tries to motivate him to get him out of whatever funk he’s in. Even as Rocky’s bent over, his wife is in a coma and he just had a son he hasn’t even held yet. Rocky doesn’t say anything in the scene. He just sits there and listens. Burgess Meredith goes through the gamut of emotions from frustration, to yelling. It’s a beautiful, beautiful scene, and that’s the scene that my dad always would play to get me fired up. – DeadlineCoogler turned to Stallone and asked him about continuing the franchise. The upcoming Creed takes the series in a whole new direction, as the aging Rocky takes on the role of mentor and trainer to the son of Apollo Creed. The true legacy of any artist’s work is the impact it makes. Most of the time, the creator will never even know that they’ve changed someone’s life. That is part of being an artist. Creating work for others, with the hope that what you make will live on. In some way, each project you work on will be a memory for someone. That’s why you should make the best of every project. You never know how you will truly impact others. The story of Rocky – the movie franchise, not the character – is a great source of inspiration and wisdom for anyone interested in making films.Top Image: Sylvester Stallone on the set of Rocky IV via MGMCreed, the seventh installment of the Rocky franchise, is about to hit theaters. Let’s take a look at how one small film used new technology, great music, and incredible editing to create one of the biggest film franchises ever. Here are 7 things filmmakers can learn from the Rocky franchise.I. Montage and Propaganda Are PowerfulImage via MGMThe Rocky films had a huge impact on making the modern movie montage. The first film set the tone with an iconic training montage that went on to be replicated in countless films, including nearly every sports film made since. Rocky went on to win an Oscar for Best Film Editing.Outside of the first film, Rocky IV is known for an incredible amount of montages. Heck, 31.9% of the entire film is just montages, and the movie is still awesome. The Rocky IV montages tie closely to the original Soviet Montage Theory.Sergei Eisenstein first developed the intellectual montage in Battleship Potemkin. The film was a propaganda piece designed to influence an audience with a tertium quid, or a third thing people associated with two elements. In the infamous Odessa Steps sequence, the audience would see soldiers firing among a crowd and immediately feel helpless and oppressed. That feeling of oppression is the tertium quid.Rocky IV is an incredible piece of American propaganda. The film features Rocky training in a cabin out in the wilderness, while his opponent trains in high-tech facilities with a whole team of scientists. Those two images give American audiences a feeling of perseverance no matter the opponent, a tertium quid of strength. You may think that a montage is cheating, but it really is a great technique to use. You can control your audience’s emotions with a powerful montage. It’s all in the edit.II. Embrace New TechnologyImage via NPRWhen Rocky director John G. Avildsen wanted to film part of the original training montage, he wanted the audience to move with Rocky. To accomplish this, Avildsen turned to camera operator Garret Brown. Brown had recently created a new camera stabilizer, which he called the Steadicam.Garret Brown had recently used the device on two other films, and the footage had absolutely blown everyone away. Rocky was one of the first films to use the Steadicam, which has since become a standard piece of filmmaking equipment.last_img read more

first_imgA women’s organisation in Arunachal Pradesh has sought a ‘one man, one wife’ policy for ending polygamy among resourceful tribal people in the State. The Arunachal Pradesh Women’s Welfare Society (APWWS) has also suggested the implementation of the Central Civil Services (Conduct) Rules in the State to stop polygamy and adultery by government employees, besides denial of tickets to men with “multiple wives” for rural and Assembly elections. The APWWS made the suggestions in a memorandum to Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women chairperson Radhilu Chai Techi during a programme to observe its 40th foundation day on Thursday. The organisation’s outgoing president Dipti Bengia Tadar said that rich and well-qualified officers in the State had been indulging in polygamy, causing distress to many tribal families.Arunachal Pradesh has 26 major tribes and scores of sub-tribes. Traditional tribal laws allow polygamy among certain tribes and associated disputes are usually settled by customary courts that are allegedly pro-men.The first district and sessions courts were set up only after December 2007 when the judiciary was separated from the executive in the State. The State women’s commission has demanded compulsory registration of marriages towards stopping polygamy and cases of domestic violence against women in Arunachal Pradesh.Ms. Techi and other members of the commission in June met Chief Minister Pema Khandu to apprise him of “hundreds of cases related to marriage” that the commission deals with.“Marital disputes remain unresolved or partially resolved due to lack of registration,” Ms. Techi said, asking the government to come up with a feasible Act under which all marriages are registered.Women’s rights activists say polygamous men usually take teenage girls from economically weaker sections of society as the second or third wife apparently to rescue them from poverty. Many of these young wives end up as victims of abuse and need to be rescued. Some are abandoned too. The APWWS has been facilitating the stay of such victims at safe homes.last_img read more

first_imgOTTAWA – Environment Minister Catherine McKenna is facing legal action from several environmental groups who accuse the government of dragging its heels on investigating Volkswagen for duping Canadians with diesel engines.Volkswagen pleaded guilty in the U.S. in March after software was found in certain diesel vehicles that made it appear as though the cars were producing fewer emissions than they really were.In fact, under normal conditions, the cars emitted 35 times Canada’s legal limit on nitrogen oxides, which have adverse effects on human health and contribute to climate change.About 105,000 of the rigged vehicles were sold in Canada and Volkswagen has a court-certified settlement program underway to buy back the cars and compensate Canadians who owned or leased them.A statement from McKenna says her department is investigating and will act if necessary, but that investigation is nearly two years old and two groups, Environmental Defence and the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, are tired of waiting.Tim Gray, executive director of Environmental Defence, said his organization heard informally from the government that almost two years after the department began investigating there wasn’t a lot of confidence Canada could do anything about the Volkswagen violations. He said if the government doesn’t act when there is a “violation of environmental law at this scale” and an admission of guilt in the United States regarding the same cars, it sends a horrible message.“It basically puts a mark on Canada as a place to get away with dumping your crap into the environment and nothing will be done about it,” said Gray.So on June the two agencies joined forces to apply for a ministerial investigation to be launched under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act.Provisions of that act allow a member of the public to seek a minister’s probe into allegations of violations of the act and to be updated on that investigation every 90 days. The application asked for investigations into four allegations including that Volkswagen imported cars that violated Canadian emissions requirements, applied the National Emissions Mark on diesel cars which didn’t meet the standards and then sold those cars, provided false and misleading information and earlier this year resumed sales of the 2015 models without fixing the emissions problem.Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Environmental Enforcement Directorate responded by saying because the department was already doing an in-house investigation on the first three items, there would be no ministerial probe. The department said it would launch a new investigation into the last claim, which looks at what Volkswagen did to fix its 2015 diesel-engine cars before starting to sell them again in Canada. This week the two organizations filed suit to force McKenna to comply with their application on all four issues.Amir Attaran, a lawyer with the Ecojustice environmental law clinic at the University of Ottawa who represents the individuals who filed the suit, said without launching investigations under Section 17 of the act, the government doesn’t have to update anyone on what it is doing to investigate. He said it has been nearly two years since the issue was first made public and Environment Canada launched its investigation. It has been almost six months since the company pleaded guilty in the U.S. and agreed that it wouldn’t deny wrongdoing in other countries as part of that plea. With all this, it doesn’t make sense that Canada hasn’t been able to complete its investigation and file charges here.Ontario NDP MP Brian Masse said Canada doesn’t take this kind of situation seriously enough and urged McKenna to act as soon as possible.Environment Canada spokesman Mark Johnson said in an email it is not abnormal for an investigation of this complexity to take two or three years and that work has to be completed to put together the strongest possible case before deciding whether to recommend charges be laid.—follow @mrabson on Twitter.last_img read more

Given his reputation as a dual-threat QB, it might surprise you (it surprised us) that Watson led a pass-first offense last year, averaging almost double the yards through the air (334) as on the ground (170). According to expected points added, Clemson’s passing game generated 9.1 more points per contest than its rushing attack. Fast forward to 2017, and the offense has changed its focus, winning with a dominating run game. As a team, the Tigers are rushing for 105 yards more a game than last year, causing their offensive EPA to tilt in favor of the running game by 10 points per game. After serving as Watson’s understudy for his first two years, junior quarterback Kelly Bryant has been a driving force behind this change in playing style. Bryant is notching 25 yards more on the ground per game than Watson did last season. And he already has seven rushing touchdowns — Watson scored nine all of last season. It’s not been all about the offense, though. Defensive holdovers Austin Bryant and Dorian O’Daniel have helped Clemson’s D generate 6.1 more EPA per game in 2017 than it did last year. And unlike the offense, the Tigers’ defense has improved against both the pass and the run, cutting their points allowed per game almost in half to just 9.2.Swinney’s greatest coaching feat may come soon if Clemson continues winning. So few coaches in the game have shown the ability to continue winning amid a drastic change in playing style — Nick Saban and his recent rotating stable of quarterbacks at Alabama come to mind. And, not coincidentally, Saban — whose Alabama teams faced off against Clemson in the past two title games — will likely be waiting for him in the College Football Playoff. Undefeated and ranked No. 2 in the AP poll, the defending champion Clemson Tigers are roughly a third of the way to reaching this season’s college football national title game. It would be their third straight trip. That’s hard to do, so much so that no college football team has made it to three in a row since the Florida State Seminoles did so from 1998 to 2000.On Saturday, Dabo Swinney’s 4-0 Tigers will travel to Virginia Tech for what may be their toughest — and most important — game until the playoff bracket is decided. And they’re already coping with one major change in 2017 from the school’s last two dominating teams: Deshaun Watson now plays for the Houston Texans. But despite the departure of the superlative quarterback, Clemson has managed to survive by transforming the strength of its offense overnight.Heading into 2017, you couldn’t be blamed for thinking Watson’s production would be sorely missed. After all, he averaged 5,218 total yards in his last two seasons at Clemson — 4,351 yards passing and 867 yards running. And as we’ve previously noted, it’s difficult for teams to maintain offensive efficiency the season after losing their starting quarterback. But Clemson hasn’t missed a beat on offense. The Tigers are averaging 37.8 points per game through four games, compared with 39.2 for all of last season, and that includes a 14-6 dogfight with the Auburn Tigers in Week 2. So how has Clemson managed to play so well despite losing their talismanic quarterback? read more

first_img Share Tags: Profit Report, Statistics, WestJet Wednesday, December 5, 2018 By: The Canadian Press TORONTO — WestJet Airlines Ltd. aims to lift its profits over the next four years, predicting earnings growth of 40% on a per share basis between 2019 and 2022 after a turbulent year.Soaring fuel costs, labour unrest and steep competition at home and abroad caused Canada’s second-largest airline to incur its first loss in 13 years during the second quarter, followed by a steep year-over-year drop in the third quarter – which nonetheless bounced back into the black.Revenues and efficiency were “nowhere near” the airline’s potential, chief executive Ed Sims said at a WestJet investor conference in Toronto Tuesday.Strong demand, more branded fares and higher ancillary fees will boost its revenue per available seat mile to between two per cent and four per cent in 2019, Sims said.Branded fares bundle various perks – such as pre-reserved seats and baggage checks – at a higher total price.Earlier this year, the airline launched transatlantic service on the first three of an expected 10 Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft in a bid for business passengers that challenges Air Canada’s transatlantic dominance.A crowded domestic market resulted in “over-supply” and weaker revenue per available seat mile – a key industry metric that divides operating income by passenger carrying capacity.A freshly expanded Flair Airlines, soon-to-launch Canada Jetlines Ltd., and Air Canada’s low-cost Rouge are all crowding the budget airspace that WestJet has flown into with its four-month-old, ultra-low-cost Swoop.More news:  TRAVELSAVERS welcomes Julie Virgilio to the teamThe market saturation means WestJet will “step back from profitless volume,” Sims said. The airline aims to grow passenger capacity by between 6.5 per cent and 8.5 per cent next year, mainly through three Dreamliners embarking on non-stop service from Calgary to Dublin, Paris and London’s Gatwick Airport this spring.Only a sliver of the beefed-up capacity will come from the domestic realm, where Swoop plans to expand its fleet to 10, WestJet said. The airline is battling with Air Canada on a number of fronts. Its Encore regional service goes up against Air Canada Express and its ultra-low-cost Swoop airline recently launched flights to the U.S. and the Caribbean, in competition with Air Canada’s six-year-old Rouge unit.On top of a long-range fleet that still dwarfs WestJet’s, Air Canada’s recent deal as the lead of a consortium to buy the Aeroplan reward program from Aimia Inc. represents another potential advantage Sims hopes to reduce through a travel rewards partnership with Mastercard and the Royal Bank of Canada.Sims appeared undaunted by his biggest competitor’s purchase of Aeroplan, announced Nov. 26.“I don’t have a concern,” he said in an interview Friday.“I think competition in this space is healthy. It forces both coalitions to strengthen the relationship, and I would characterize our relationship with RBC and Mastercard as every bit as strong as our competitor’s relationship with TD, CIBC and VISA.”More news:  Hotel charges Bollywood star $8.50 for two bananas and the Internet has thoughts“We fully expect a number of our passengers to be carrying both cards,” he added. On Tuesday his airline broadened its codeshare agreement with Qantas Airways, giving WestJet access to the Australian carrier’s flights between Los Angeles and Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, along with any attendant reward miles. WestJet’s joint venture with Delta Air Lines, announced in July, opens up more of the southern U.S. and western European markets via flights to Atlanta and Barcelona. Nonetheless, luring high-flying passengers away from Air Canada without an alliance network to top it off could prove tough.WestJet remains outside the constellation of major airline alliances, comprised of Star Alliance – of which Air Canada is a member – SkyTeam and Oneworld.Next year, WestJet expects to spend about $1.1 billion on deposits and purchases related to the Dreamliners and Boeing 737 MAX narrow-body aircraft. It also plans expenditures of about $980 million in 2020 and $1.1 billion in 2021 on seven more Dreamliners. The company has signed a letter of intent to sell and lease back the first three Dreamliners, on track for delivery early next year. << Previous PostNext Post >> WestJet aims for turnaround after turbulent yearlast_img read more

first_imgWhen you picture the drug ketamine, you might think of that stoner you knew in high school or a bunch of people popping pills in neon-lit clubs. But do you ever picture a dentist’s office? Ketamine is often used as an anesthetic for procedures on people’s teeth. And it’s a multi-tasker. The Food and Drug Administration recently approved Spravato, a drug based on ketamine, called esketamine, to treat depression via a nasal spray. Here’s more about the FDA’s designation from The Verge:The drug must be administered as a nasal spray, patients must be taking another antidepressant at the same time, and it can only be given to patients who have (unsuccessfully) tried two antidepressants before. Most notably, people won’t able to pick up Spravato at the local Rite Aid. Spravato will only be available in certified clinics.Ketamine may not work for every patient, but for some, it may come as an enormous relief.About 12 to 20 percent of adults with depression don’t respond to other types of treatment or medication. That population is called “treatment resistant.”And some of the more commonly prescribed drugs, like Prozac or Trazodone, don’t have the efficacy we might hope for; studies show only around 37 percent of those who use these medications experience full remission.Journalist Alice Levitt is one of those treatment-resistant patients. And she finally tried ketamine. Here’s part of what she wrote for Vox about her experience:Each infusion lasted 45 minutes. After my first one, I had a nurse play the cast album of my favorite musical as the drip began. Instead of running wild, my mind became immersed in the music, albeit in a deeply dreamlike state. Each time, it took about 15 to 20 minutes after the effects of the treatment wore off for me to be able to open my eyes and start walking. Afterward, I was exhausted. The half-hour Uber ride home felt like hours as I longed for the warm embrace of a nap.Immediately after each treatment, I felt down. But by the time I woke up the next day, I was in less psychic pain and had more purpose. I would start the day on my long-neglected spin bike, feeling motivation that I’d lacked for months. Lunches with friends no longer felt like they existed just to show them I was still alive and making an effort to get out of the house. I was beginning to connect with the world outside my head again. I noticed myself smiling more. According to Shah, feeling the effects of ketamine within 24 hours of treatment is typical. “It is the most rapid-acting treatment for depression,” he said. After the final infusion, I had the initiative to start writing again. The following week quickly filled up with activities, both work and fun. I was living for the first time in months. It’s been three months since my last treatment, and I’ve even started to feel excited about my future. Shah says I am unlikely to need another dose — I was in the roughly 70 percent who achieve remission after one series of ketamine infusions. And while the research still doesn’t conclusively show that esketamine or ketamine causes depression to go away, the FDA said it approved Spravado because patients needed a new alternative. How do we treat an illness that affects millions of Americans? And why does it seem to be so challenging to find things that help?Produced by Gabrielle Healy. The abrupt reversal came days after officials announced a proposal to allow drilling in virtually all coastal waters The abrupt reversal came days after officials announced a proposal to allow drilling in virtually all coastal waters, drawing immediate criticism from environmentalists.Republican Governor Rick Scott of Florida was among the early critics of the plan that is part of President Donald Trump’s “energy dominance” focus, saying oil drilling threatened Florida’s natural resources, an issue that has long had bipartisan support. Interior secretary Ryan Zinke announced the move on Twitter, saying: “I support the governor’s position that Florida is unique and its coasts are heavily reliant on tourism as an economic driver.”As a result… I am removing Florida from consideration from any new oil and gas platforms.”The program “proposes the largest number of lease sales in US history,” and opens 98 percent of recoverable oil and gas reserves in federally-controlled waters to development, according to the Interior Department. While offshore drilling is defended as a vital source of jobs and economic development in a few states like Texas and Louisiana, many other parts of the country have vigorously fought drilling due to environmental hazards and the importance of tourism to their local economies.Republican governors including Maryland’s Larry Hogan and South Carolina’s Henry McMaster have balked at offshore drilling, while the practice is anathema in Democratic-leaning California and northeastern states.California’s attorney general Xavier Becerra immediately demanded a similar exemption for his state. “California is also ‘unique’ & our ‘coasts are heavily reliant on tourism as an economic driver.'” he tweeted. “Our ‘local and state voice’ is firmly opposed to any and all offshore drilling. If that’s your standard, we, too, should be removed from your list. Immediately.” Citation: US declares Florida exempt from offshore drilling plan (2018, January 11) retrieved 18 July 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2018-01-declares-florida-exempt-offshore-drilling.html © 2018 AFP California is well-equipped to block new drilling Explore further The Trump administration on Tuesday said it would not allow oil drilling off the coast of Florida after pressure from the state’s Republican governor.
