FacebookTwitterLinkedInEmailPrint分享Wall Street Journal ($):Wind and solar farms are attracting interest from investors hungry for low-risk, stable-yield opportunities at a time of extraordinary market volatility. That interest is a boon for renewable projects, and could give them a financial boost in coming months and years. However, developers could face challenges in getting additional new projects financed and built amid the turmoil created by the new coronavirus. It might seem an odd time for a renewable-energy uptick, given the economic slowdown and a historic crash in oil prices that is making fossil fuels cheap. But wind and solar farms experienced a similar surge after the 2008 financial crisis, when investors seized on the projects as safe-harbor investments with yields in the mid-single-digit percentages.Wind and solar farms have contracts to sell their electrical output to utilities and companies with good credit ratings for a decade or longer, making their returns stable and relatively low risk.Corporations contracted for 46% of the 20.2 gigawatts of renewable energy added to the U.S. grid last year, according to the Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance, a group that represents corporate purchasers. The largest buyers last year were Facebook Inc., Alphabet Inc. unit Google and AT&T Inc. Corporations have been contracting for renewable energy because prices are low and because many have made pledges to lower their carbon output. “No one has yet indicated that they intend to slow their purchase,” said Miranda Ballentine, the group’s CEO.“Renewable-power generation is largely uncorrelated to oil and natural-gas markets, which further strengthen their overall appeal, and may well be one of the first assets classes to unfreeze,” said Keith Derman, co-head of Ares Infrastructure and Power at Ares Management Corp.[Russell Gold]More ($): Wind, solar farms are seen as havens in coronavirus storm Interest in low risk, stable yield renewable energy projects remains strong—market participants
Women’s Equality Day is celebrated on Aug. 26 each year. It commemorates the 1920 adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment granting women the right to vote and has been celebrated in the U.S. since 1973. While much progress has been made in the area of gender equality since that time, digging a bit beneath the surface unearths some telling trends. The bad newsHere are some global stats, based on research conducted by Filene, to consider as it relates to gender parity:Women generate 65 percent of consumer discretionary spending, but their presence in the economy and representation in leadership roles remains unbalancedWomen are 20 percent less likely than men to have a formal bank account and often lack access to savings, credit and other financial servicesThe World Economic Forum predicts the gender gap will not close entirely until 2186When it comes to the credit union industry, some progress has been made, but not enough. Women are still very under represented in senior leadership positions within the industry, and the disparity becomes especially apparent when you look at credit union asset size. In the U.S., women make up 70 percent of credit union employees, yet only 53 percent of all federally insured credit unions have female CEOs and 20 percent have female board presidents. continue reading » 6SHARESShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblr

“And Ceballos is in the middle because he came before Pepe, but he got an injury and he stopped training. He needs to know the Premier League, so today was important for him and for us.”– Defensive lapse –Meanwhile, Newcastle manager Steve Bruce was left to rue a key defensive lapse in his first match in charge of the club he supported as a boy.The 58-year-old could only look on as full-back Ainsley Maitland-Niles intercepted Paul Dummett’s attempted pass to substitute Jetro Willems before feeding Aubameyang.“That’s the big disappointment for us all, to lose it in the way we did, a mistake,” Bruce said.“We defended fantastically well throughout the game — I can’t remember my goalkeeper making a save, and that against Arsenal is a big, big positive.“But we’re disappointed that we made a mistake and unfortunately left ourselves open and got punished.”Newcastle, who handed a competitive debut to club-record signing Joelinton, started promisingly and were unlucky not to score when Jonjo Shelvey hit a post, while the Brazilian striker forced a first-half save from Gunners ‘keeper Bernd Leno.“Listen, we have made a genuine mistake. When the pass was too short or whether he hasn’t reacted quickly enough, at the end of the day, I can’t criticise anybody for making a mistake,” Bruce added.Share on: WhatsApp Aubemyang off the mark. PHOTO ARSENAL MEDIANewcastle, United Kingdom | AFP | Unai Emery saluted Arsenal’s gritty 1-0 win at Newcastle on Sunday as the Gunners erased the painful memories of last season’s away-day woes.Emery’s side did not record their first Premier League clean sheet on their travels until April last term and managed only one in the top flight all season. That wretched run played a key role in Arsenal’s failure to finish in the top four. But Emery has worked hard to overhaul Arsenal at the start of his second season in charge, with a host of new signings and a more determined mentality fuelling the north Londoners’ solid effort at St James’ Park on Sunday. While they were only sporadically effective in attack, they remained organised enough at the back to keep Newcastle at bay until Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang fired the second-half winner.New boys Dani Ceballos, Nicolas Pepe and Gabriel Martinelli were introduced from the bench to add more optimism for Arsenal fans.“I want to win, I want to score and I want to do a clean sheet. Today we won and we did that,” Emery said.“The balance offensively and defensively is only taken with the victory. Today in our 90 minutes, we could do that.“Also, we created chances and we need also to create chances for our strikers and today with Auba, we won.”Asked about his new signings, Emery added: “David Luiz did pre-season with another team and he is OK to play physically, but he only trained completely with us yesterday. On Friday, he did 30 minutes with us.“Nicolas Pepe came one week ago and physically he needs to get his best fitness to be ready to play 100 percent for 90 minutes. Today, 20 minutes is good for him.
13 Jul 2013 Glory for Spain and disappointment for England Golden glory for Spain and disappointment for England – that’s the story of the final day of the European ladies’ team championship at Fulford, York.Spain (Image © Leaderboard Photography) beat Austria in the final to become champions for the fifth time, amid scenes of great celebration by the players. But England ended the week empty handed when they lost the bronze medal play-off to Finland. The team were on the back foot after lost both morning foursomes, one finishing on the 19th and the other on the 18th. But they vowed to come out fighting in the singles – and that’s exactly what they did. They needed to take four of the five afternoon matches and, although Bronte Law lost her match, it was a case of ‘game on’ when Georgia Hall, Hayley Davis and Meghan MacLaren all won. But a birdie blitz from Lauren Taylor’s opponent stopped the charge in its tracks.Lauren had been ahead after 13 holes, but Finland’s Krista Bakker, produced a run of consecutive birdies on the 14th, 15th and 16th to come from one down to two up. When the 17th was halved, England’s medal hopes were finally ended and it was Finland who took the bronze.England captain Emma Brown remarked: “We had a great fightback in the singles, they all played well this afternoon and made it an exciting, close match. They are disappointed, but they have done well and they will bounce back.”Steve Robinson, the England coach, echoed her words: “We’ve given a lot of people a lot of entertainment this week and we ended up playing for a medal.“We would have liked to win one and I am disappointed for the girls after they put in such a lot of effort. I can’t fault them for effort, they were 2-0 down and they gave Finland a fright. I’m proud of them.”In the final, Spain put the early pressure on Austria when they won both morning foursomes and needed just two points from the singles. The afternoon session was closely contested and each side had won a point before the top game turned into the decider. Austria came down the 18th one-up, but Spain’s Noemi Jiminez squared the match when she got up and down from a bunker for birdie. When she sank her par putt on the 19th to win the hole and the championship it was the signal for the Spanish celebrations to begin.Spain’s captain Mabel Pascual Del Pobil said: “I am so happy, it has been so tight. We have been so close this year in other events that we really wanted this. It’s been a really tough week and the girls have played great. I am very, very proud of my team.”The championship ended as it began, in glorious sunshine, with another eye-catching ceremony featuring all the teams and the Yorkshire Volunteer Band.Tributes were paid to Fulford Golf Club’s support for the event, for their green staff’s work to present the course in superb condition and for the army of volunteers who helped to make the tournament run so smoothly.Fulford president Barbara Saville told the players: “We have loved having you here and hope you return to your countries with happy memories.”The 2014 championship will be hosted by Slovenia.Finals placings1 Spain2 Austria3 Finland4 England5 Denmark6 France7 Netherlands8 Sweden9 Germany10 Belgium11 Ireland12 Scotland13 Wales14 Italy15 Slovenia16 Norway17 Iceland18 Switzerland19 Slovakia
QPR entertain Cardiff City in front of the Sky cameras on Saturday evening and are 23/20 to win their first home game of the campaign.Boss Chris Ramsey will have been delighted with the win at Yeovil in midweek after a disappointing result at Charlton on the opening day.A late Craig Noone strike gave Cardiff a point at home to Fulham last weekend but Ramsey’s scout is unlikely to have suggested to him that the Welsh side are anything out of the ordinary. This is a game the R’s should win – and I think they will.Incidentally, they are out to 20/1 for the Championship after the Charlton reverse. They must make Loftus Road a fortress.Fulham entertain Brighton earlier in the day and are 31/20 against a Seagulls side (19/10) who have won both their matches so far this term.Albion are invariably tough to break down and in Lewis Dunk they have one of the best defenders in the division – but for how long? This is another game where I expect to see a narrow home win and Matt Smith looks overpriced at 15/2 with BetVictor to grab the opener at the Cottage.Having come from 2-0 down in stoppage time to rescue a point against a good Ipswich side last weekend, Brentford went down 4-0 to League Two Oxford United in the Capital One Cup.The Bees are 13/8 to pick up all three points at Ashton Gate on Saturday with Bristol City 7/4 and the draw 5/2.That one looks too close to call. I think Brentford will have to settle for another draw and recommend the 6/1 for a 1-1 draw .For all the latest football oods, check out Betvictor.com.Be lucky.CharlieFollow West London Sport on Twitter Find us on Facebook
11 May 2015Cape Town International Airport is set for an overhaul with the upgrading of its domestic and international terminals planned for the airport, along with the realignment of its runway, forming the bulk of Airports Company South Africa’s R7.7bn expansion plans.Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) spokesperson Collin Naidoo, speaking at the Indaba 2015 in Durban on Sunday, said the developments were part of Acsa’s new operating model aimed at improving South Africa’s airports. The expansion is set to be completed over the next three years. The 21-year-old company is run by the Department of Transport and, says Naidoo, is “one of the better performing parastatals”. More than 38-million passengers move through South Africa’s nine airports every year.‘Signs of growth’When asked about the proposed expansions at Lanseria, South Africa’s only privately owned international airport which plans to build a new airport terminal, Naidoo said Acsa did not see it as a threat but rather a sign of good growth for the country.“This is both a challenge and an opportunity, seeing all the upgrades and growth at Lanseria is promising, it says good things about the area,” said Naidoo.Global operationsAcsa manages the Mumbai International Airport and is facilitating the development of a new airport terminal. The Indian airport sees more than 28-million passengers annually. Acasa has a 10% stake in the airport, and is positioned to be at its helm for the next 25 years, Naidoo said.Acsa also runs Brazil’s airport in Sao Paulo, which recently built a new terminal. Two years ago, Acsa signed a memorandum of understanding with Ghana Airports to manage its airports.Naidoo said Acsa’s way of doing business kept the company accountable to its stakeholders, including government, and saved it from “relying on handouts”.Source: News24Wire
Share Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Ohio landowners could avoid soaring property tax increases in the future as both the House and Senate introduced bills that make changes to the Current Agricultural Use Value (CAUV) formula that would result in more accurate valuations for landowners.Rep. Brian Hill, R-Zanesville, is the sponsor of House Bill 398, and Sen. Cliff Hite, R-Findlay, is the sponsor of Senate Bill 246.“We appreciate Representative Hill’s and Senator Hite’s leadership in sponsoring these bills, which will improve the accuracy of the CAUV formula and mitigate the size of tax increases,” said John C. (Jack) Fisher, Ohio Farm Bureau Federation Executive Vice President.Ohio Farm Bureau has done an extensive study of the CAUV program and identified adjustments to the formula that would provide fairness and accuracy while protecting the integrity of the program. Because no administrative action has been taken on its proposed CAUV changes, Ohio Farm Bureau began pursuing legislative changes. Both bills would enact Ohio Farm Bureau’s suggested CAUV changes. The organization is challenging two inaccurate assumptions in the CAUV formula’s capitalization rate: that land is a short-term investment and that it becomes more valuable as its mortgage is paid down. The two bills would prohibit certain non-agricultural factors from being used in the CAUV formula and remove disincentives for farmers to engage in certain conservation practices. The current CAUV formula assumes land is held for only five years when in reality farmland is typically held for decades and across multiple generations. Currently, there are non-use factors in the formula that inflate farmland value by assuming land appreciates and landowners achieve equity buildup at predetermined rates. But these have nothing to do with the agricultural use of the land. In both bills, the use of equity buildup and appreciation factors would be prohibited. Also in the bills are stipulations that CAUV land used for a conservation practice or enrolled in a federal land retirement or conservation program for at least three years be valued at the lowest of the values assigned on the basis of soil type. This requirement would encourage practices that protect the environment and water quality. Currently, farmers are discouraged from idling land because it is taxed as though it is producing crops. Farm Bureau believes taxing conservation lands at the CAUV minimum value is appropriate because conservation lands are non-producing.This is Ohio Farm Bureau’s second set of recommended changes to the CAUV program. The Ohio Department of Taxation enacted Ohio Farm Bureau’s first round of suggested changes: to more closely tie tax values to current economic conditions in agriculture; include more recent data on crop mix, prices, yields and production costs; and better represent the true value of woodlands compared to cropland. Those changes affect taxes paid in 2016 for counties going through a reassessment this year.

It’s a follow-up to some of the recent changes that Google has made to help tackle email overload, most notably with the addition of the Priority Inbox. The new feature, only available in Labs at the moment, is called Smart Labs and it adds filters to your incoming email based on their type – Bulk, Notification, or Forum.“Bulk” mail includes any kind of mass mailing, such as newsletters and promotional emails. These are filtered out of your inbox. “Notifications” are messages that are sent to you directly, but include things like billing statements and receipts. Email from group mailing lists are labeled as “Forums.” If you already use filters to organize your messages, you’ll be relieved to know that these new labels won’t impact your system. You are able to edit your current filters so that they are included or excluded from the Smart Label categorization. You can also edit the Smart Label filters themselves. If you don’t currently use an elaborate labeling system, then Smart Labels can certainly help you get started by putting some of these very basic filters in place.Having a smarter, more manageable inbox isn’t just something that Google is working on. The new Smart Labels are reminscent of the service offered by OtherInbox, which also helps minimize your email clutter but then goes the extra step of sending you a nice email reminder with a digest of that “other stuff” so that you don’t miss important messages that aren’t in your inbox any more but in some other vast pile of unread messages. To activate the new feature in Gmail, go to the Labs tab under Settings and search for Smart Labels.
When shooting directly at the sun, some digital cinema cameras suffer from the “black sun effect,” which can leave a nasty-looking hole in your image. Here’s how to fix it in DaVinci Resolve.Top image via ShutterstockOne very common (and frustrating) issue that most filmmakers eventually face is the black sun effect. If you’ve ever experienced this issue, you know just how annoying it can be to review your otherwise perfect looking footage, only to realize there’s a big black hole right in the middle of the shot. Most often, this artifact is a result of extreme overexposure — hence why it’s so common when pointing your camera at the sun. The center of the overexposed portion of your image will simply clip to black, as opposed to clipping to white, which inevitably leaves an ugly mark on your footage.Image via ShutterstockNot all cameras will have this issue. In fact, most don’t suffer from this problem. But some digital cinema cameras (such as the original Blackmagic Cinema Camera) are prone to it and need to be handled carefully in post to get rid of the problem. The good news: it’s actually very easy to fix this problem in just about any color correction software. For the purpose of this post, I’ll describe the steps that I’d recommend using in DaVinci Resolve — but keep in mind, you can apply these principles no matter what color software you’re using.Step 1: Add a WindowThe first step you need to take after importing your footage is to create a power window around the black spot on your footage. This usually works best with a small circular window positioned directly on top of the black hole. You might want to add a touch of softness (or feathering) to the window, but try to limit the overall size as much as possible. You really only want it affecting the black spot and maybe a few surrounding pixels.Step 2: TrackOnce your window is set up properly, the next step is to use a tracker (such as DaVinci Resolve’s built-in tracker) to track the mask to the black spot. This step might not be necessary if you were shooting a locked-off shot on a tripod, but if you were panning, tilting, or shooting handheld, you’re definitely going to need to track your window. Once the track is complete, you can move on to the final step.Step 3: Levels AdjustmentWith your window now tracked perfectly to the black spot on your footage, all you need to do is lift up your shadows as much as possible. The easiest way to do this in DaVinci Resolve is to crank up the “lift” wheel as far as possible, so that your black level effectively turns white. This will completely eliminate the black spot in your footage, leaving you with a perfect final image. To help visualize these steps, be sure to check out the video below. It will show you exactly how to remove the black sun effect on your footage.Have any additional tips/tricks/techniques for adjusting sun spots? Please share them in the comments below.

Story Highlights Prime Minister of Barbados, Hon. Mia Mottley, is proposing that the process to verify Certificates of Recognition of CARICOM Skills Qualification be revamped to shorten the time in which this exercise is undertaken. This, she suggested, can be done by adjusting existing legislation to allow the burden of proof to be shifted to the applicant to swear to the authenticity of the certificate, and if later found to be fraudulent, to show cause why the document should not be revoked.“If we do that simple amendment to the legislation, it means that the process which is taking two (to) four months, can now be done within two to three days at most with respect to accreditation,” she said. The Barbadian Prime Minister was addressing the opening ceremony for the 39th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM on Wednesday (July 4) at the Montego Bay Convention Centre in St. James. The Certificate of Recognition of CARICOM Skills Qualification guarantees qualified nationals the benefit of moving and working freely across the region. This document, which is a provision under the CARICOM (Free Movement of Skilled Persons) Act, allows these privileges without the need for a work permit or permit of stay.Ms. Mottley lamented that the matter of accreditation and the issuance and verification of skills certificates have impeded the day-to-day lives of too many CARICOM citizens, stressing that “this is of great concern to us… . We have to change and change urgently”.She pointed out that in her country, between 2006 and 2018, the Accreditation Council issued 2,039 Certificates and verified another 1,122. Out of the 3,161 certificates, 10 were fraudulent.“In other words, 0.3 per cent of certificates that we spent months seeking to verify, were fraudulent,” she said.Ms. Mottley stressed that in the age of technological advancements, such as blockchain technology, “we must be able to do better at real-time communication, particularly as we go forward in the issuance of skills certificates and diplomas that will allow for more ease of verification”.The Meeting of the CARICOM Heads is being held from July 4-6. Among the key agenda items are crime and violence, disaster management and climate change, and the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME).The Conference of Heads of Government, which consists of the Heads of Government of the Member States, is the supreme organ of the Caribbean Community and determines and provides its policy direction. This, she suggested, can be done by adjusting existing legislation to allow the burden of proof to be shifted to the applicant to swear to the authenticity of the certificate, and if later found to be fraudulent, to show cause why the document should not be revoked.

WASHINGTON – A rising stock market lifted U.S. household wealth to a record $106.9 trillion in the April-June quarter, the culmination of a decade of economic recovery but a gain that is concentrated largely among the most affluent. The value of Americans’ stock and mutual fund portfolios rose $800 billion last quarter, while home values increased $600 billion, the Federal Reserve said Thursday. Total household wealth is now 2.1 per cent higher than in the first quarter, when it was $104.7 trillion. The Fed’s report came on a day when a wave of buying on Wall Street sent U.S. stocks surging and lifted both the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Standard & Poor’s 500 stock index to all-time highs. The Dow has gained nearly 8 per cent this year, the S&P nearly 10 per cent.Household net worth reflects the value of assets like homes, bank accounts and stocks minus debts like mortgages and credit cards. The data aren’t adjusted for inflation or population growth. They also don’t reflect the experiences of most U.S. households. Stock market wealth has been flowing disproportionately — and increasingly — to the most affluent households. The richest one-tenth of Americans own about 84 per cent of the value of stocks. That’s up from 81 per cent just before the Great Recession began in late 2007.That trend is concerning to some economists, who regard such sizable disparities in wealth as unhealthy for an economy. When lower- and middle-income people don’t share much in overall prosperity, many are forced to absorb more debt and take other financial risks.“I would be happy in a world where we saw big stock increases — if stocks were more broadly distributed across the population,” said Josh Bivens, director of research at the liberal Economic Policy Institute. “The fact that is where most of the gains are going is worrisome.”In theory, greater household wealth can speed the economy by making consumers feel richer and more likely to spend. But most consumers are spending less of their wealth than they did before the recession began, economists have found.Americans are saving nearly 7 per cent of their incomes, according to Commerce Department figures. That figure has remained fairly steady for five years even as the stock market has set new highs and average home prices have increased faster than most people’s wages. That trend suggests that many people remain cautious about cashing in their wealth, economists say, perhaps because they regard it as less stable than in the past. The rising concentration of wealth among affluent and educated Americans is another factor why the nation’s increased net worth isn’t accelerating the pace of consumer spending. Richer households are less likely to spend their wealth gains than middle- or lower-income households are.America’s richest 10 per cent of households were nearly 120 times wealthier than the lower middle class in 2016, the most recent year for which figures are provided in a separate Fed report. That is up from 112 times in 2013. (The lower middle class was defined as those whose wealth placed them between the 25th and 50th percentiles of net worth.)The top 10 per cent had an average net worth of $5.34 million; for the lower middle class, the figure was $44,700.In 2008, the year the financial crisis erupted, U.S. household net worth was $58.9 trillion. Nearly a decade later, it has almost doubled.Sharp disparities in wealth also cut across racial lines. The median white household has a net worth of $171,000, according to Fed data. That’s about 10 times the typical net worth for a black household of $17,200. For Latinos, it was $20,700. (The median is the point at which half the population has more and half has less.)The Fed revised its previous quarterly data to show that household wealth was higher earlier this year than previously reported. Household wealth in the first quarter is now about $4 billion higher than was original reported, mostly because of higher pension reserves than previously estimated.___AP Economics Writer Josh Boak contributed to this report.
NEW DELHI: Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar on Tuesday stepped in to help Rahul Gandhi’s Congress and Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party work out an alliance in the national capital for the Lok Sabha elections. Pawar also reached out to AAP’s Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh soon after.Sources said the Congress leadership is also in talks with AAP leaders and senior leaders within the party are trying to convince Delhi Congress leaders for an alliance with the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP. Also Read – Uddhav bats for ‘Sena CM’The Congress had earlier decided to go alone in Delhi after talks with AAP failed and local leaders favoured that the party contests LS polls alone. The Delhi Congress leaders felt that “saving” the party was crucial in Delhi in view of impending assembly elections in the state slated later. AICC general secretary in charge of Delhi Congress, PC Chacko, said: “I am in consultation with Congress party leaders in Delhi on the possibilities of forging an alliance with AAP.” Also Read – Farooq demands unconditional release of all detainees in J&K”The Congress Working Committee has decided to align with like-minded parties across the country to defeat the BJP in Lok Sabha elections. I hope Delhi Congress leaders also go by this sentiment and decide on an alliance with AAP, but a final decision will be taken by the Congress president very soon,” Chacko said. Chacko’s views are at variance with Delhi Congress president Sheila Dikshit, who had made it clear that aligning with AAP will not be in the party’s interests keeping in view the assembly election in the national capital slated later. On other hands, Delhi Congress chief Sheila Dikshit has written to party president Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi saying forging an alliance with the AAP for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in Delhi will harm the party in the long run. In the letter, Dikshit and working presidents Haroon Yusuf, Devender Yadav and Rajesh Lilothia protested a recent phone survey to gauge workers’ mood on the alliance. Dikshit and the working presidents have urged the Congress chief not to have an alliance with the AAP, saying it will harm the party in the long run, said a Delhi Congress leader. AAP leader Sanjay Singh said after meeting Pawar that with the Constitution, democracy and the country in ‘danger’ under the Modi government, attempts should be made by all opposition parties to unite and come together to fight it out. “The party can be saved later … there will be enough time to save the party. Right now the attempt should be to save the country and democracy, which is in danger due to the Modi government,” he said, without giving details of his meeting with Pawar. Meanwhile, Aam Aadmi Party on Tuesday stated that it will not have any pre-poll alliance with Congress in Delhi and will contest all seven Lok Sabha seats alone. “This time we are really serious about it,” Delhi convenor Gopal Rai said when asked how serious the party is this time about its decision this time. “The indecision in Congress has killed our time for the campaign. We made all possible efforts for alliance but now there is no room for reconsideration,” Rai said.
I must have visited Kerala more than a dozen times. Each time, I have stayed as a guest of either a luxury resort or in one of the famed Kerala homestay properties. Never did I venture to stay in Kerala’s many luxurious kettuvalams (houseboats) until my childhood friend Jacob Kutty urged me to try one of Kerala’s best backwater destinations – the shimmering Lake Vembanad, which happens to be one of Asia’s largest freshwater lakes. While there is no dearth of luxury hotels and resorts in God’s Own Country, the Kerala houseboat segment has provided a kind of shot-in-the-arm for Kerala Tourism and today, Kerala has carved a niche for itself as one of the world’s premier backwater cruise destinations, welcoming the discerning world traveller in a most unique way. Also Read – Oman – Beauty with an addressI hopped on an early morning flight from Kolkata to Chennai and from Chennai to Cochin. Around 3 pm, I reached Cochin. Jacob was there to receive me and we reached the magnificently appointed Kumarakom Lake Resort. The unprejudiced eye of the architect echoes in every nook and corner of the resort. Here, at the Kumarakom Lake Resort, the virtually impossible seems graceful and easy. Be it the ethnically designed Heritage Villas, Lake Villas or the marvellously luxurious Presidential Suites, the resort is a supreme adjustment to opportunity and local conditions. All attention has been concentrated on creating art, like one beautiful picture. Also Read – CANADA: A traveller’s delightI was told by the resident naturalist that the Vembanad Wetland system has been integrated into the list of wetlands of global importance in terms of wetland conservation and happens to be the largest of the three Ramsar Sites in Kerala. Vembanad Lake today has become a major tourist destination due largely to its ethereal and picturesque setting. As we ventured towards the impeccably conceived Kumarakom Tourist Village, which happens to be the most popular site on the shores of the shimmering lake, a sense of fulfilment engulfed me. For the benefit of travellers, the village offers a bewildering array of recreational pursuits like luxurious boat cruises, yoga & meditation, the famed Kerala Ayurvedic massage therapies, fishing to name just a few. In fact, the ingenuity of Keralites is admirable – from thoughtfully prepared itineraries to an amazing array of holiday experiences like tracing family history, eco-friendly initiatives and a one-of-its-kind cultural experience with the host community to name just a few. They have compelled the new-age traveller to not only embrace the backwater holiday but also herald the beginning of ‘Responsible Tourism’ in this gem of a tourist state. Being a travel writer, it was most refreshing to absorb the sheer enthusiasm of the support staff at the resort who would go that extra mile just to see you smiling and satisfied. Since I had limited time at my disposal, I preferred to remain within the resort premises to explore every nook and corner of this Eden on Earth. It was only in the evenings, with the red molten ball setting on the distant lake horizon, that I would venture to the impeccably designed luxurious houseboat of the resort, embark on a peaceful 1-1.5 hour night cruise, indulge on a few sips of my favoured tipple, have a sumptuous dinner on board and retire for the night in the king-size bed onboard the houseboat. To explore the nocturnal joys of the backwaters, the concept of ‘Backwaters by Night’ is becoming a rage in Kerala; and I must admit that the joy of viewing nocturnal creatures is thrilling. There was just enough ambient light, courtesy the moon, and pretty soon things got interesting. The expert boatman knew the backwaters by the tip of his fingers and he would often halt at the right places, by the edges of the lake. All sorts of nocturnal creatures: frogs and snakes, fish, large aquatic insects and other weird and wonderful things could be seen prowling in the shallows, right next to the shore. If it is spring or summer, a nocturnal symphony of frogs may be on display. After indulging and being thoroughly pampered on the kettuvallam (houseboat), I can vouch that it is one thing to be pampered in a super-deluxe hotel but quite another to spend time on the banks of Kerala! From the splendid luxurious isolation of Kumarakom Lake Resort, it was now time to appreciate yet another niche backwater holiday in God’s Own Country. We proceeded to the west of Kumarakom and soon figured out the gorgeously anchored Park Apsara, which has provided a new dimension to backwater holidays in Kerala – a touch of boutique hotel experience along with a harmonious blend of the famed European yachting spirit; a spirit of inquiry in nature’s lap, a spirit of discovery and bliss. The sophisticated Park Apsara is a pioneer project of India’s one and only 5-star boutique hotel chain – The Park Hotels. This luxurious cruiser is innovatively built on two levels by the renowned Dubai-based CDB Yacht Design. With eight elegantly designed rooms, an exclusive gallery, saloon and dining area, a sundeck and a fabulous seating area that offers breathtaking vistas of the ethereal backwaters of Kerala, one couldn’t have asked for more. The interiors are sophisticated and ooze luxury. I was particularly impressed with the harmonious décor and quality of food served in the lakeside restaurant that offers some of the most amazing culinary delights from Kerala along with a bewildering array of gastronomic delights from the world over. Every evening, to keep guests entertained, the cruise staff organises cultural shows on the vessel’s deck (vallom) that reverberate with Kerala’s rich heritage and culture. On the penultimate day of my stay, after lunch, which consisted of the quintessential Chettinad cuisine, cooked to perfection by the resident chef, I ventured to an adjoining hamlet; quaint as it was, would you believe, gorgeously dressed womenfolk who were busy preparing for Onam that was just a week away, came out with all guns blazing – singing local Kerala hymns and folk songs as rehearsal that sounded incredibly melodious. The manner in which the quality of life of the rural folks has improved alongside the preservation of nature and cultural heritage is impressive. Here in God’s Own Country, the slow-moving carts still ply on village roads, thatched hutments are in existence, joyful village theatres are active, cows and buffaloes are still being used in tilling the soil and popular folklore remains alive. Add to it the characteristic features of a sustainable backwater holiday option and you have all the makings of an Eden on Earth. The entire experience reminds me of Rishi Aurobindo’s immortal poem: When you and I, we played together, Who my playmate was I did not know. Without a fear, without a shame, Life in quiet ease did flow…
Colombo: The Sri Lankan authorities on Monday enforced a six-hour countrywide curfew as communal violence continued to spread in the island nation in the latest fallout from the Easter Sunday suicide bombings, which killed nearly 260 people. “The curfew has been imposed from 9 p.m. tonight to 4 a.m. tomorrow,” a police spokesperson said. Earlier in the day, the police reimposed a curfew, few hours after it was lifted, on four towns of Kuliyapitiya, Bingiriya, Dummalasuriya and Hettipola in the north western region till 4 a.m. tomorrow following a communal clash in the area. The blockade of Facebook and WhatsApp comes a day after Sri Lankan police imposed curfew in the country’s western coastal town of Chilaw where a mob attacked a mosque and some shops owned by Muslims in a dispute that started on a Facebook post by a Muslim shop owner. The violence is a new backlash from the Easter attacks where nine suicide bombers, including a woman, carried out a series of devastating blasts that tore through three churches and three luxury hotels, killing 253 people and injuring over 500 others. The Islamic State terror group claimed the attacks, but the government blamed local Islamist extremist group (NTJ).

He opined that Parveen’s ability “to sense the human (and that of animals as well) predicament in the most sensitive manner and then to express these dialectics in a cinematic way are her greatest strengths. The fact that she was from Lucknow said a lot about that place too”. On the other hand Saif Mahmood, who is also the co-author of Tahir Mahmood’s magnum opus ‘Muslim Law in India and Abroad’ said, “Not many know that the practice of ‘triple talaq’, banned by the SC recently, was not just unconstitutional but also un-Islamic. Prevalent only among India’s Muslim community, who follow the Hanafi Islamic school of law, this practice is not recognized anywhere else in the Muslim world. In fact, Islamic law is a progressive law, and only one of its kind, which seeks no evidence for divorce. Speaking further, he said, “The beautiful tehzeeb of Lucknawi culture, which sparkles in her writing, is the most stunning quality of her craft.” David Syiemlieh, Chairman UPSC, expressing his opinion said, “The small, insignificant and countless problems that people go through every day are presented evocatively”. Parveen Talha, who belongs to an old family of Awadh, settled in Lucknow after her retirement. She is involved with social service which includes working for animal rights. Veteran journalist Sadia Dehlvi, who engaged Parveen Talha in a conversation around the book along with Nalini Jain, spoke about Talha’s love for animals in real life and the unparalleled beauty with which she expressed every nuance of life in her book. Lastly, Trisha De Niyogi urged the readers to treat this book as a work of fiction. “Though the title points out to the burning issue of Triple Talaq and touches upon various social concerns like women empowerment, children psychology, Ganga Jumni tehzeeb, and others. Our concern for live issues should not detract the merit of the book as a creative writing.”
Kolkata: The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) may use drones to locate mosquito breeding grounds at the vacant land owned by the Railways near the Bailey Bridge in ward 81.A team of KMC led by Deputy Mayor Atin Ghosh went to ward 81 on Thursday to conduct the anti-dengue drive. The team found that the land belonging to the Railways has not been maintained properly and it is covered in shrubs and bushes. The team then visited Sahapur colony, where 14 people had been afflicted with dengue in 2018. The team examined the surroundings and told the residents about the dos and the don’ts. KMC has been carrying out anti-dengue drives throughout the city, with a view to eradicate the disease. Most of the drives are led by Ghosh. The civic authorities had launched a massive anti-dengue campaign on February 2, when 144 rallies were taken out in the city to create awareness against the disease. The main rally was taken out from the KMC headquarters on SN Banerjee Road, which was led by Mayor Firhad Hakim. It has been decided that the civic authorities will carry out drives against dengue in three phases. The first phase, which started in February, will continue till June. The second phase will start from July and continue till October, while the third phase will be the follow-up phase that will be carried out in November and December. The civic authorities have also opened 16 dengue detection laboratories. The KMC teams are visiting individual houses, housing complexes and institutional buildings and are examining the underground reservoirs and overhead tanks. They are also checking whether garbage has been cleaned properly or not.

The abrupt reversal came days after officials announced a proposal to allow drilling in virtually all coastal waters The abrupt reversal came days after officials announced a proposal to allow drilling in virtually all coastal waters, drawing immediate criticism from environmentalists.Republican Governor Rick Scott of Florida was among the early critics of the plan that is part of President Donald Trump’s “energy dominance” focus, saying oil drilling threatened Florida’s natural resources, an issue that has long had bipartisan support. Interior secretary Ryan Zinke announced the move on Twitter, saying: “I support the governor’s position that Florida is unique and its coasts are heavily reliant on tourism as an economic driver.”As a result… I am removing Florida from consideration from any new oil and gas platforms.”The program “proposes the largest number of lease sales in US history,” and opens 98 percent of recoverable oil and gas reserves in federally-controlled waters to development, according to the Interior Department. While offshore drilling is defended as a vital source of jobs and economic development in a few states like Texas and Louisiana, many other parts of the country have vigorously fought drilling due to environmental hazards and the importance of tourism to their local economies.Republican governors including Maryland’s Larry Hogan and South Carolina’s Henry McMaster have balked at offshore drilling, while the practice is anathema in Democratic-leaning California and northeastern states.California’s attorney general Xavier Becerra immediately demanded a similar exemption for his state. “California is also ‘unique’ & our ‘coasts are heavily reliant on tourism as an economic driver.'” he tweeted. “Our ‘local and state voice’ is firmly opposed to any and all offshore drilling. If that’s your standard, we, too, should be removed from your list. Immediately.” Citation: US declares Florida exempt from offshore drilling plan (2018, January 11) retrieved 18 July 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2018-01-declares-florida-exempt-offshore-drilling.html © 2018 AFP California is well-equipped to block new drilling Explore further The Trump administration on Tuesday said it would not allow oil drilling off the coast of Florida after pressure from the state’s Republican governor.
