Former Jamaican and Caribbean junior squash champion Julian Morrison broke through to claim his first senior title when he won the Liguanea Club Open on Saturday night. In an explosive five-game finals match, Morrison stopped seasoned campaigner O’neil Johnson, but the veteran didn’t go down without a fight.Undaunted by the fact that Morrison was the favourite, Johnson served notice that it would be a hot contest when he won the first game. Morrison rallied to win the second and pull even, only to have Johnson come back and take the third. The youngster dug deep to blast back and take the fourth game. The final game went right down to the wire, but the rising squash star kept his head to win 19-21, 21-20, 19-21, 21-18, 21-20.MORE CONFIDENCE”This is pretty good because it gives me more confidence playing at the senior level, which will help me now that I’m on the pro tour where I’ll have to play top players,” said Morrison, reflecting on his first senior title. He recently joined the Professional Squash Association (PSA).In another exciting match, Andrew Levy beat Greg McClure 3-2 to win the consolation plate.Liguanea Club General Manager Gordon Edwards said Morrison’s win brought the weeklong tournament to a satisfying conclusion.”We had great matches and good-quality squash all week, but it was good to see Julian Morrison, a young player who we have watched grow up, come through and win his first senior title,” Edwards said. The tournament was sponsored by Total, UHY Dawgen, Avis, Lifespan, KLAS ESPN Sports FM, Epic Technologies, Jamaica Biscuit Company and Cari-Med.
