They are no longer a league game for us as Elk Valley is coopting with Fredonia, which makes them a big 3A school. There were a lot of unknowns. Our kids did a great job of working counts at the plate and we were able to get runners on via the walk early. Then we executed with runners on and were able to score a pile of runs in Game 1 in the 3rd inning to put it away.I believe we put up 11 runs in that frame. Grant did a great job on the mound, kept his pitch count low and pitched to the zone. He also did a great job at the plate. We got quality production out of the Shimkus boys and Dalton Silhan.  Game 2, our offense was a little sluggish compared to game 1. We had some poor execution of situational hitting early in that game. Cal Shimkus got his first career varsity win on the mound for us.He did a great job of filling it up with strikes and getting outs when he needed too. Cal’s a freshman and it’s been great to see his confidence continue to build on the mound as the year has gone on. Grant and Camren led the offense in game 2. We executed some little things to extend the lead and then Cal basically locked them up for the win. This was a sweep we needed at this point in the year. It was key especially for our freshman to have a little bit of success. Freshman Dalton Silhan had been struggling at the plate coming into these games and he busted out of that in a big way in Game 1.Credit to him, he just keeps working everyday and getting better. Not letting little things get him down.4-27-15Game 1: Udall 9 Oxford 1Pitching: LP — Grant Smith: 4 IP, 7 K’s, 8 BB, 4 ER. Cameren Clements - 3 IP, 4 K’s, 1 BB, 1 ERBatting:Oggie Shimkus 1-2, single, 1 RBI, 1 BB.Dalton Silhan 1-2, single.Game 2:Udall 4 Oxford  2Pitching:LP — Oggie Shimkus 6 IP, 5 K’s, 2 BB, 3 ER.Cal Shimkus - 1 IPBatting:Dalton Silhan  2-3, 2 singles.Dakota Mitchell 1-2, single, scored 1 run, 1 sac bunt.Derek Williams 1-3, single.Green’s Comments on Udall double header:I thought we had a chance to compete with Udall coming into these games. The are tied for first in our league and we had lost a close game two weeks ago to Flinthills who is tied with Udall for the league lead and we thought we had a shot. Grant didn’t have his best outing on the mound after pitching well the week before. Credit to the maturity of him, he flat said I didn’t pitch well. For a sophomore to say that says a lot about his character. We continued to battle but after we got in a hole early it proved to be tough. We barreled up some balls really well. Udall’s 2B Tanner Roberts had a heck of a game for them. He made several plays that as a baseball guy, you just say wow, what a great play. He had himself a day robbing us of hits in key situations in Game 1 especially.Game 2, we played well, we just did not get timely hitting. Oggie threw well as did Billy Barnett from Udall. It was a well played game for the most part and both pitchers just competed and battled. We scratched out 2 runs but couldn’t get closer.Udall is about as solid a team defensively as you will see in our league. I was proud of our kids for competing in the 2nd game and battling. That’s the type of development you want to see out of a young team. We had 6 freshman, 2 sophomores, and one senior on the field the majority of the game. You always worry about how young kids will respond in tough situations but our kids have done a great job handling adversity as the year has gone on. Next up: West Elk on Monday, May 4th. We have two JV double headers, one tonight, one Friday.Follow us on Twitter. Close Forgot password? Please put in your email: Send me my password!
