MMAmania.com More From Midnight Mania! Trump Family In The ‘Chaos’ Corner? Sale More: Hang tight, big fella, it’s almost over.Daniel Cormier, who won the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix tournament this past May 19, 2012, when he handily defeated Josh Barnett in the finals in San Jose, California, now knows the date of his final fight with the promotion. He’ll lace up the gloves for Strikeforce one last time on Sept. 29 at a venue and location still to be announced. The big question, of course, is who exactly his opponent will be. The options are extremely limited, at least as far as viable contenders go. The issue the powers that be will have is finding a heavyweight of decent value that won’t be considered a glorified can for Cormier to crush before skipping off to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).The trouble with that is “DC” is currently the fourth ranked heavyweight in the world according to the SB Nation consensus rankings. Only UFC Heavyweight Champion Junior dos Santos, number one contender Cain Velasquez, and the next man in line for that title, Alistair Overeem, are ranked higher. That means dipping lower and if the UFC is unwilling to send a member of its roster over, that only leaves Josh Barnett (ranked 7), who Cormier just beat, Fedor Emelianenko (ranked 15), who is retired, Cole Konrad (ranked 17), who fights for Bellator, and Sergei Kharitonov (ranked 20), who doesn’t really deserve to be anywhere near a match-up against Cormier. What makes the most sense from a sport perspective is Fabricio Werdum heading back to Strikeforce for a truly meaningful match-up that will create yet another top contender to the UFC heavyweight title. However, that would mean Dana White giving up one of his guys to benefit Showtime and who knows if that’s something that would ever happen. This all adds up to a potentially horrifying match-up between Cormier and someone entirely too undeserving of getting a shot at him. But who will the mystery man be?Let’s get your best guesses in the comments section. Fight Motion! Watch Holloway, Cyborg Do Work Via Ghost Camlast_img
